Controversy!

This is not a typical post for the Gmamas, but it’s one I think has to be said.

Even though we’re a Kdrama centric blog, our passion and interests in all things Korean finds its way to our posts. Who knew watching Mr. Sunshine several years ago would lead to trips to Korea and Kpop?

Well, it has, and today I find myself reading and commenting on anything and everything Korean. Right now I find myself focusing on the latest discussion. BTS has announced they will not submit their music for the 2027 Grammy Awards. This has been on every news front from VARIETY to COSMOPOLITAN. Even the venerable NEW YORK TIMES has an article about their decision. Heck, they even called it a boycott! For those of you who haven’t read about this, here is BTS’ direct quote:

“We have decided not to submit an entry for Grammy consideration this year. We hope music can be heard and loved for what it is, rather than being divided into region or language.”

Their decision seems to be a result of the new 'Asian pop' category the Grammy organization has created to recognize different types of Asian music. By creating a separate 'Asian' category it diminishes their music... It appears that BTS is pushing back against labeling music by ethnic origins.

I bet you know how I feel about BTS’s decision and this new Grammy category. I’m completely in favor of BTS's decision and and completely opposed to the new category created by the Grammys.

. BTS has become a global phenomenon. They’re just too big for one specific category. Putting them in this class would be like putting Taylor Swift in a 'Caucasian' category. She transcends any label, and so do they.

It would be wonderful if the Grammy organization could see the error of their ways and back down. I don’t see this happening. We must support BTS with their decision! ~ Pat
