Catalog vs Booklet

Judy here. For those of you who watch Kdramas you will know what I'm referring to in this post. For those of you who persist in ignoring Pat and Me, let me educate you a bit.

In Kdramas, Koreans fold letters and use envelopes in a slightly different way than Americans. For Americans we typically fold letters into 3rds (called a letter fold) and insert it into a regular, #10 size, business envelope that is open on the long edge.

Not so in Kdramas. They will frequently fold their letters in half and then in half again going the same direction (called a double parallel fold) and insert them into an oversized envelope, perhaps a #11 size, business envelope that is open on the short edge.

The American style envelope can be called a booklet envelope... it opens on the long edge. The Korean style envelope can be called a catalog envelope since it opens on the small edge. (This is the kind of minutiae you learn if you work in the printing industry for almost 40 years.)

In Kdramas you will also notice that the writing reverts back to the vertical style of traditional Hangul instead of the left to right reading Hangul you see in modern day Korea. Letters of Resignation are notoriously familiar to Kdrama fans for this reason.

In modern day Korea I do not know if envelopes are addressed like we do in the USA using a horizontal format. Or if these vertical format envelopes are the norm. Perhaps someone can chime in on this & let me know? Just one small cultural difference I've noticed!

Whoa, spoken like a former printer! I never saw any of this. If it were about food, however, I’m your woman. ~ Pat How can you NOT see this? It's so noticeable to me!!! ~ Judy

We do left to right.

But for condolence money, resignation letters, etc., it is written vertically.

Look at us.... we're starting to notice all the little things that are different between Korea and the US! And our Guet is correct; sme type envelope for funerals, etc.... and always with two hands!

Also, when money is given at funerals or weddings, it’s given in the same shape envelope. Envelopes are given to recipient with both hands.

Ah, OK! Those letters of resignation... now that you mention it, I'd noticed that without really noticing it!
