TRAVELS WITH JUDY... the retrospective

Pat: OK, we came, we saw, we conquered. Wait, that’s not right. (I think that’s left over from ninth grade Latin class).

Judy: This whole weekend was sold to me as a visit to the RM exhibit at SF MOMA and a K-pop dance class. I was even sent a video clip of the dance number we would be learning. I was especially pleased because said dance number was the one I learned in Seoul, meaning I would be way ahead of the other classmates….

Pat: Of course, Judy has confused a dance video I sent her with what she THOUGHT the Kpop dance party was going to be. It was NEVER going to be a dance CLASS. It was a Kpop dance PARTY. Well, we were both wrong. I know that never happens, but this time it did.

Judy: The RM exhibit was crowded and very good. I especially enjoyed RM’s commentary as it was down to earth. That being said, I am not particularly interested in modern art so the mere fact I was there is impressive. Also, there was an entire section of the exhibit that was subtitled ‘Umber.’ For someone like me with a strong aversion to brown it was pushing the envelope.

Pat: Of course Umber was my favorite part of the exhibit! I agree with Judy: RM’s thoughts on his collection and the art he had pulled from SF MOMA’s arsenal was the best part of the exhibit. His take was clear and refreshing. His inventory features Korean artists, and it was fascinating to see what he has acquired since he started collecting.

Judy: Another fun feature of the MOMA visit was being approached by a Taiwanese woman who asked if we were fans of BTS. She had flown over for the exhibit and to visit various sites in the area. We also joined up with friend Tracey from the Bay Area who shares an interest in K-Everything. In this regard it's always fun to find people who share your obsessions.

Tracey (who is probably more immersed in Kdramas than us,) Pat, our new friend from Taiwan, & Judy.

Judy: Now for the 'Dance Party.' Mind you, I've been entertained to the highest level by visiting the infamous Kiss Kiss Bang Bang Nightclub in LA so perhaps I was expecting too much. After getting a drink (Makgeolli in my case because they didn't have Soju) Pat and I found a chair to enjoy the night's activities. Turns out this Dance Party consisted of 4 local dance clubs performing to some Kpop songs and.... 6 Drag Performances. Neither Pat nor I have anything against Drag Shows but we felt the Drag Performances were a bit uneven.

Pat: I rarely say this, but here goes: Judy is COMPLETELY CORRECT! This dance party was disappointing. The drag performers had complicated dance moves, yes, but they didn’t resonate with our expectations. The dance clubs performed very well, but the whole evening was a bit of letdown for us.

Judy: Sadly, at no point did I have the opportunity to get up and really show off my dancing skills. We left before 9pm and the only redeeming feature was the very friendly hostess who feigned excitement when we provided her our Gmama business cards. ....Although it's been almost 48 hours and she has not followed us yet.

Pat: Really, the most "dancing" we did was when we sashayed out of there!

Judy: All this being said you know the reason I spent the money & time to visit here was Pat. The fact that I don't like modern art and did not get to attend a Kpop dance class is secondary to the fun we had just catching up & seeing a bit of San Francisco.

Judy still: And the incessant information and discussion of food that Pat provides me is truly incredible. Did you know she prefers the local co-op grocery because the butcher doesn't wrap the chicken in plasti-wrap? I mean, who cares about this stuff?

Pat: Yes, we had a great time. I always love sparring with Judy, and I got to do it for three whole days. Woohoo!

Pat still: Now about my food centric life. It's difficult being around someone who doesn't care about what she consumes. I probably could have figured this out by myself when I saw her eat 5 or 6 Kopiko candies and call it "lunch." In a word, UGH.

Judy: And we're still friends!

You are both lucky to have a friend with whom you can disagree/argue over the smallest differences and laugh about it, too.

Pat, I'm definitely with you on plastic wrapped chicken!

I can just hear the two of you banter the whole time and I'm exhausted ;-)
