ARE WE STILL IN HIGH SCHOOL?

At the 46th Blue Dragon Film Awards, husband/wife couple Hyun Bin and Son Ye Jin cleaned up. He won the Best Actor award for Harbin, and she received the Best Actress award for No Other Choice. This is the first time a married couple has won these awards in the same year. Congratulations to both. I hope I have the opportunity to watch both of their performances.

Together they also won the Popular Star Award. It’s like winning a popularity contest. Wait! It is a popularity contest. Fans choose the winners. A similar award, the People’s Choice Award, is the closest we have to the Blue Dragon Popular Star award. (We also have the Nickelodeon Kids Choice award where it’s an honor to get slimed. Don’t ask.) Our award ceremonies don’t mix the two types of awards together. Our more prestigious shows are voted on by groups of peers in the industry. The others are not.

I can’t help but think having popular categories mixed in with the more professional ones cheapens the overall gravitas of the awards themselves. I did notice that the larger news outlets like The Korea Herald and The Korea Times gave very little press to the popularity awards part of the Blue Dragon awards. That’s how it should be. ~ Pat

I think the biggest story that came out of these awards was the interaction between singer Hwasa & actor Park Joeng-min. The song A Good Goodbye is definitely trending on social media and we all need to learn "the wave" that goes with it! His participation doesn't start till about 2.5 minutes into the video but boy, it's caused lots of Korean women to swoon. Let's face it, I'm just hipper than Pat. ~ Judy
