BARBARA…Again!

It's Pat again! I just spent three weeks in Minneapolis, and lucky me, I got to hang out with Barbara again. We spent an afternoon sharing all our photos from our recent trips to Korea, we had lunch at a fantastic Korean restaurant she introduced me to, and I got to sit on on a class she’s auditing at the University of Minnesota.

The restaurant we had lunch at is Abang Yoli. I like it so much I dragged my family there the next day. The owner, a nice young guy named Jamie Yoo, made our lunch with house made steamed buns and grilled tofu with homemade chili crunch. Yummo.

I think Minneapolis has more Korean food options than Tucson. And with this plug for his restaurant I'm not sure why the owner isn't following the Gmamas yet...

Reliving our separate trips to Korea was so much fun. Even though we went to many of the same places, our experiences were somewhat different so I got a unique take on what Korea could be like if I return.

The most interesting thing I did with Barbara was auditing the class she’s taking. The class title, ‘Current affairs and Everyday Life in Two Koreas’, is taught by Professor Hangtae Cho, a native Korean who came to the USA around 1997 during the time of the IMF crisis. His lecture focused on chaebols. Did I have a clue what a chaebol was? DUH….I’m almost an expert now that I’ve watched so many kdramas! It was a fascinating afternoon.

Thanks, Barbara!

Of course we know what chaebols are!!! Any devotee of Kdrmas is familiar with this... the uber rich class of business owners that dominate Korean society.

This is now getting kind of funny... I bet our readers are getting knd of tired hearing about Barbara!! Well, it's just one of those serindipitous things that we've made this connection and it clicked. A bit of emailing back & forth, a lunch or two, and suddenly Barbara is on Judy's trip to Korea and an honorary family member. There are several other connections that we've made that need more follow up... Hear that Yvonne? Next time I'm in the Bay Area count on getting together with Pat and me!

Awwww, what a nice post to wake up to! It was such great serendipity that your daughter lives in Minneapolis, meaning we've gotten to hang out during your visits. And even though I introduced you to these Korea-related places (Abang Yoli and my university class), your outgoing nature has taken it to the next level -- like, without your asking my professor, I would never have known he was initially a scholar of Old English! And the owner of Abang Yoli cooked your lunch! And yes, thanks to Pat's nudging, I ended up on the fantastic trip to Korea that Judy organized, which was the best, most rewarding way I could have gone. I'm very grateful. If not for that, if…
