Chopsticks & Spoons

Korean utensils. Let’s discuss. Of course Kdrama actors use chopsticks, and theirs are uniquely Korean. They are stainless steel and look like knitting needles. In fact, after having tried to get the food to my mouth with a pair, I’ve decided knitting needles might be preferable. I’m no stranger to chopsticks. Two years in Taiwan, three weeks in Japan, with a few side trips to Hong Kong thrown in have made me very comfortable with them. This, however, has taken me over 50 years! My first meal in Taiwan the chopsticks and I were at war. I distinctly remember the server coming over to me and taking them out of my left hand (yes, I’m left handed) and putting them in my right hand. It was a no go. After two years there I had mastered the bamboo ones and could pluck any food and put it in my rice bowl and stuff it in my face. These skinny metal Korean ones are, as one young friend exclaimed, “a complete nightmare”. Yet these handsome and beautiful Korean actors make it look so easy. Take a look at what i bought my 6 and 8 year old granddaughters here. They might be the perfect solution for Korean chopsticks!

Which is why I must discuss THE KOREAN LONG HANDLED SPOON Yes, this little beauty deserves to be in CAPS. The bowl of the spoon is round, not oval, and makes it so much easier to deliver the food into my mouth. Of course I have several (spoons, not mouths) and can almost fantasize I’m in a kdrama eating a meal when I use them. EATING! That’s next! ~ Pat
I've decided to start using Chopsticks at home. When I visit Korea I do not want to embarrass myself or Pat with my inept chopstick usage. In fact, in the mail today she sent me a long handled Korean style spoon. You will see chopsticks and these long spoons routinely on my favorite shows. Just know that I'm mimicking them at home. Wish me luck... ~ Judy
The photo we've included is a pic of children's chopsticks that I bought for my 6 and 8 year old granddaughters. They mastered them immediately. The burning question is should I send some to Judy? Weigh in on this momentous decision, please. ~Pat

Having eaten a zillion meals with Judy over the 47 years that I have been married to her brother, and having traveled with her to Japan and China, I think the spoon-thingie is the best option for her (and me)😁.
I think you’ve become quite the expert when it comes to Korean chopsticks!
And these comments from my friends! By the way, I now have a rather extensive collection of Korean chopsticks and long handled spoons courtesy of my Favorite Daughter... and I will mention that the metal ones can get hot!
Yes, Judy needs them!
I too have been challenged to use Chopsticks. I have been corrected but still don't have dexterity to pick up grains of rice as my kids do. I like the way they slow down the eating process. Also interesting is the differece between Chinese, Korean and Japanese chopsticks. The tips are slightly different.
