It's Real!

Although I absolutely love Kdramas I recognize that perhaps some of the story lines are fictional. A recent article in the Korea Herald caught my eye. A popular Kdrama right now is The Trauma Code: Heroes on Call and apparently it reflects what is happening in Korean Emergency medicine today! (And you thought it was all silly tropes and gorgeous Korean men...) The Herald mentions that among many challenges to the medical profession in Korea, a premier training hospital for Trauma Doctors was closing it's training department for budgetary resons. This discussion is a major part of the Kdrama.... just like in real life.
The series also focuses on a young doctor (of course he's gorgeous) who has to decide between specializing in Trauma or Colorectal Surgery. The later, apparently, is the 2nd most profitable department in Korean hospitals... after cosmetic surgery.... and thus, a very safe career choice. (Actually in the Kdrama they discuss the most profitable vs least profitable departments and it was great fun to watch the discussion... no spoilers though from this Gmama.) Trauma Departments are notorious money losers and the Kdrama focuses on this dilemma as well as the immense pressures put on Trauma staff due to its 24-hour nature.
It's great fun for me to be entertained by these shows and then to see the 'real life' situation appear in a reputable newspaper. I feel so informed... ~ Judy

In the picture, the doctors have blood on their shirt cuffs but not on their gloves! Maybe that is a prop to help viewers take the show seriously.
