I was lucky enough to see this play in San Francisco last weekend. This was the play that inspired the eponymous Netflix show. Playwright Ins Choi not only wrote the play but also starred in the leading role.
The story is a humorous take on the serious subject of immigrants who have made their home in foreign countries. Here the country is Canada, the city, Toronto. Ins Choi is a Korean by birth but a Canadian citizen as well.
I watched the first two episodes of the Netflix series and didn't enjoy it. For me, it was a bit too flip, silly, and superficial. I realize a series with many years and multiple episodes doesn't
have to cram an entire story into 90 minutes the way a play does, but it lost the essence of what made the play so special and unique.
For several of us, there were some tears remembering our own families and the loss of older generations. This is especially poignant in these days. Enough said.~Pat
My 2 cents worth: I think Pat is getting maudlin. And I had to look up the meaning of eponymous... I was unfamiliar with the Netflix series and the Play. I'm showing my uncultured side, aren't I? ~ Judy
