SCANDAL...
Having just watched My Mister, where they use the English word ‘scandal’ numerous times, I thought I would try to understand why they do that.
I mean, they could use a Korean equivalent, but they don’t.
So I did a superficial dive into the why, and this is what I came up with: NOTHING. I don’t have a clue why they use it. It’s like when they use the word ‘fighting’ in Kdramas instead of a Korean word. It’s in so many of them that it seems universally accepted. Whenever I hear that word, I think what they are trying to say is ‘you’ve got this.’
But why they’re using ‘scandal,’ I have no idea.
Speaking of the ‘s’ word, I see that there is a new Kdrama out September 18 starring Son Ye-jin of Crash Landing on You fame and Ji Chang-wook in of one of my all time favorites, Healer. Guess what the title is? That’s correct: SCANDAL! Can’t wait. ~ Pat
Well, like many words they're using loaner words! Loaner words are when they take the English word and make it sound Korean. Slightly different than Konglish. Other common loaner words include coffee, computer, cookie, and pizza. ~ our korean language learner, Judy.
