THIS WOULD NEVER HAPPEN STATESIDE

Ha Young is a gorgeous young Korean actor featured in the Kdrama Our Sticky Love. (I just started it and have to come clean and say I’m really watching it because Jung Hae-in is in it. He’s the charismatic actor from Something in the Rain.) I don’t remember seeing Ha Young in anything else, but apparently she was in Extraordinary Attorney Woo and other Kdramas I’ve seen and liked.

So what happened? As reported in The Korea Times, Ha has made a public apology for something her great grandfather did during the Japanese colonial period. He had ties to a pro-Japanese organization; if you’ve seen Mr. Sunshine, you know how brutal that time was. Ha was featured on a variety show where she talked about her family and their ties to western medicine. Online snoops found out about her great grandfather’s collusion with the Japanese who were in power at the time and outed him.

The agency that represents Ha made a statement that these accusations were not true. A day later they reversed their stance, and then Ha issued the public apology.

This is the part that would almost never happen in our country! Unfortunately we’re very good at pivoting and deflecting…and outright lying. Basically we have a lot of trouble saying we’re sorry. We know from watching Kdramas how much better Koreans are at issuing apologies than we are.

I commend her for being honest. I find it refreshing. I wish it happened more in my world. ~ Pat

Well what I object to is that she was negatively judged by her great grandparent's actions from about 100 years ago! Yes, Koreans are great at apologizing but from my perspective it was totally unnecessary in this case. ~ Judy

I'm so angry to see she's having to drop out of season 2 of Trauma Code because of this. Kudos to her for her honesty. I cannot believe this is being held against her given that was her great grandfather! Just awful!

I saw this news yesterday on Mydramalist and was floored and very sad to see she would be dropping out of Season 2 of The Trauma Code: Heroes on Call (an excellent series), apparently because of the activities of her great-grandfather, for which she has apologized. Is there no forgiveness for something that happened so long ago, which she had nothing to do with?
