Back up!!

It's Judy with more insightful & useless information... All Kdramas have a Lead Couple. (Or at least most Kdramas have a lead couple.) And they're great...but this blog post is about the Second Couples. I've been struck that the back-up couples are oftentimes as equally strong as the #1 couple and I root for them with the same enthusiasm.

Cha Cha: Gong Min-jeong and Kang Hyung-seok

For example, In Hometown Cha Cha Cha the Lead Couple (and winner of our favorite dimples award) Kim Seon-ho and Shin Min-ah did an outstanding job in their roles. But the other couple, Kang Hyung-seok and Gong Min-jeong were adorable and greatly enjoyed... she as a dental hygienist and he as the local cop.

Crash Landing: Seo Ji-hye and Kim Jung-hyun

In Crash Landing on You we had the leads Hyun-Bin and Son Ye-jin leading the way with Kim Jung-hyun and Seo Ji-hye as the secondary couple. I for one think that #2 Male Lead was the sharpest dresser I'd seen in a Kdrama as he played a high-rolling swindler. She was the proverbial Ice Princess back from studying in Russia. Both couples tugged at your heartstrings.

And the second couple from Guardian: The Lonely & Great God also stood out. Yes, Lee Dong-wook and Yoo In-na were great in their roles. Believe me, the leads Gong Yoo & Kim Go-eun as Couple #1 were hard to beat but Lee & Yoo gave it a try.

However, the Best Second Couple EVER also comes from Guardian: The Lonely & Great God. This time it's the fantastic chemistry the two male leads had with each other. Yes, Lee Dong-wook was exceptional playing as Gong Yoo's partner. So he gets kudos for portraying two completely different couples in the same show.

Yes, my favorite 'Second Couple' Gong You and Lee Dong-wook. These guys are amazing together.

Great insight, Judy! The couple I remember is from Extraordinary Attorney Woo. It was Ha Yoon-kyung and Jo Jong-hyun. Both were co-workers at the law firm. She was kind hearted and helpful and he was the jerk who made life uncomfortable for Woo. The interesting thing here was that they detested each other but still had an attraction. I had a feeling that if the show had continued, he would had become a good guy and they would have had a relationship. Maybe that’s just wishful thinking. ~ Pat
