SONG OF THE SUMMER

So what is the ‘Song of the Summer’? I’ve no clue, but a recent article in The Sacramento Bee said ‘Golden’ by Huntr/X, is a contender. Okay!

The ‘Song of the Summer’ is an unofficial tally on what random summer song is the most popular. There isn’t a poll or a jury for this that I know of. It seems to be word of mouth, helped by the DJ’s who play the songs. I look forward to hearing what song gets the kudos. The first one I became aware of was 2012 with Carly Rae Jepsen’s hit tune, ‘Call Me Maybe.’ It was so popular Carly Rae and Jimmy Fallon did a gig on The Tonight Show with the Roots. It was charming watching this talented group perform this catchy tune with kazoos, tambourines, washboards, toy xylophones, among other classroom type instruments.

For the uninformed, ‘Golden’ is one of the songs on the new hit animated movie, K-pop Demon Hunters. If you’re uninformed, please don’t fret. I was clueless until I watched with my 9 and 11 year old granddaughters. The 11 year old knew about ‘Golden’ before she saw the movie, so I guess the local radio stations are doing their job, as are streaming services.

Now, about the movie: true confession. I haven’t completed it (dinner took precedence). I know Judy watched it, so I’m hoping she adds to this post. (As if.) I have read that well known review sites like Roger Ebert gave it a thumbs up.

Well of course I watched it. And it's added to my spreadsheet with a rating of 7. (Remember, I'm in a battle against grade inflation...) It's a cute little movie with catchy tunes that young people everywhere are familiar with. The film definitely features some Kdrama characteristics but for a true connoisseour of Kdramas it doesn't have the gravitas that I crave. It's fluffy and light-hearted so maybe all those Gmamas who cannot make it through a 'real' Kdrama might like it! (You guys know who you are!) If nothing else they will know where that phrase 'Up, Up, Up' comes from. ~ Judy

Okay, I just finished it, and I liked it. ~ Pat

Pat again: THIS JUST IN: ‘Golden’ just made Billboard Magazine’s number one spot on their TOP 100 list! That means it’s the number one selling song in the USA, and that’s quite an accomplishment for an animated movie. When has that happened before? Almost never. And for you BTS fans, it’s a GIRL GROUP! Just saying…

The Demon Hunters was a very good movie and I have downloaded the musical album to my favourite music playlist. My grandsons, 6 and 12 were furious when I wouldn't let them watch it because I had seen it the week before. I liked it because one of the girls is actually a demon and the group dynamic changes when the other two find out. I thought that and the gorgeous way every one dressed was very good. The boys also went through a redemptive phase and I love films that teach us that redemption is possible at any time in our lives. By the way I am a fan of Forestella, BTS and Strays.

I finally watched it. I thought it was good and it had some parts where I laughed out loud - generally the way they portrayed the boy band and some other common K-drama tropes. I liked the Golden and Soda Pop songs. My husband was "reading" while I was watching th movie and afterward I heard him humming one of the songs 🤣 The ending was kind of abrupt, but definitely a K-drama ending. I hear there may be a sequel.

My grandsons were furious because I had already watched it! I liked it. Lots of friendship and redemption themes. Great songs and dancing. But once was enough. Bad Nana! 😱
